What can I expect from a Comprehensive Oral Exam?

Our comprehensive Oral Exam will take approximately one hour and includes the following:

X-Rays (Radiographs)

Many forms of dental disease are unseen and can only be detected by a set of comprehensive xrays. Examples include cavities between the teeth, impactions, cysts and infections of the bone. Types of diagnostic radiographs we may suggest include:

  • Periapical (singular, or a few teeth at a time)
  • Panoramic (wrap-around mouth image)
  • Cephalometric (image of the entire head, usually in profile)

Once the x-rays are developed, we will thoroughly walk you through your images and discuss your treatment plan options.

Individual Tooth Evaluation

We will conduct a systematic individual tooth examination to determine:

  • Tooth strength
  • Plaque and tartar buildup
  • Cavities and tooth/root decay
  • Cracks, fractures or loose teeth

We will discuss the results of your tooth evaulation with you to establish a collaborative and decisive ongoing dental treatment plan.

Bite (Occlusal) Analysis

How your top and bottom teeth are aligned and come together to form your bite is called occlusion. Our thorough occlusal evaluation will check for:

  • tooth and joint misalignment
  • signs of grinding or clenching
  • chipped teeth
  • tooth sensitivity
  • smile/facial symmetry

A well-aligned bite is an extremely important factor to your overall dental health and can alleviate conditions such as sore jaw muscles, headaches and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder.

Gum Disease Analysis

We will carefully examine your gums for signs of gum (periodontal) disease. Periodontal disease is the number one reason for tooth loss and can lead to more serious systemic issues, such as respiratory infections, diabetic complications and more. Not only will we inspect for gum inflammation and tenderness, we will measure the space pocket depth between gums and teeth for signs of recession and bone loss.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral Cancer screening is a quick, simple test, but one that is pivotal to your dental health. The screening includes assessment of gum tissue, tongue, lips and lymph nodes for abnormalities, lumps and discolourations.

Medical or Genetic Factors

Many oral health conditions have a hereditary basis. In order to determine a full understanding of your dental health, we will discuss any medical conditions or inherited risks you may be aware of. Things such as strength of tooth enamel, formation of wisdom teeth, gum disease and oral cancer may all be medical and genetic factors to consider.

Nutritional Health Consultation

The foods and beverages we consume can have a direct influence on the incidence and progression of tooth decay. If we find a significant amount of decay or stains on the teeth, we may discuss the importance of proper nutrition and the dangers that sugars, sticky or acidic foods can have on overall oral health.

How Often Should I Get a Comprehensive Dental Exam?

At Marlborough Dental Centre, we conduct a Comprehensive Dental Exam on every new patient. For ongoing patients, in addition to our regular dental checkups, we recommend a Comprehensive Exam every 3-5 years or anytime major dental work, such as dental implants, braces or intensive reconstructive work is planned.
